Best Tapas Bars and Spanish Restaurants in Newcastle

We’re back again with another instalment of our favourite Spanish restaurants that we’ve been scouring the country to find (just for you).

Moving much further North-East to our previous tapas crawl in Cardiff and our visit to the Spanish hideouts in Birmingham, we embark upon a trek to find some of the best tapas Newcastle has to offer.

We’ve sampled some of the best cuisine in the country to bring you our favourites! Here are the best tapas bars and Spanish restaurants in Newcastle.

Tapas Revolution

The restaurant was founded by Chef Omar Allibhoy, who sparked his own Spanish revolution in Newcastle after discovering a lack of Spanish cuisine. It has since become one of the most authentic and highly sought-after restaurants in the city – and for good reason!

Located among the many Eldon Square restaurants in the heart of the city centre, this is one place to tick off the Newcastle trip itinerary.

Recommended dish: Pinchos Morunos Con Mojo Picón (Marinated beef skewers with a spicy dipping sauce)

Address: Unit S3, Lower Level, Greys Quarter, Intu Eldon Square, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 7AP

El Torero

Translating to “The Bullfighter”, El Torero pulls from a wide selection of dishes from southern Spain, being dubbed as “a venue for any occasion”.

Boasting mouth-watering food, freshly sourced ingredients and a pretty special wine list, El Torero is a no brainer when it comes to the authentic Spanish dining experience.

Recommended dish: Gambas al Pil-Pil (King prawns sautéed in olive oil with sweet paprika & garlic)

Address: Milburn House, Side City Centre, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE1 1PR

El Coto

Set aside a rustic backdrop, El Coto has a look of warmth and cosiness about it. Rumoured to be haunted in parts (let’s be honest, who would ever want to leave?) the building has a rich history behind it, and houses a menu that’s rich in both its variety and taste.

With hot and cold options, paellas, salads and cured meats, there’s something for everyone.

Recommended dish: Pimientos del Piquillo con Pescado (Breaded sweet & spicy piquillo peppers stuffed with fish served with a sweet chilli sauce)

Address: 21 Leazes Park Rd, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 4PF

Las Iguanas

Among the many restaurants on Newcastle’s quayside, Las Iguanas stands out for its authentic food and atmosphere.

Ranking high atop both the quayside restaurants and Newcastle’s quayside bars, this is the place to go for both food and drink, offering “cocktail o’clock” 24/7 for those looking to extend their evening meal into a great night out!

Recommended dish: Havana Club & Jerk BBQ Glazed Pork Ribs (Pork ribs covered in a sticky rum glaze that fall off the bone, topped with crispy onion & chilli)

Address: 106 Quayside, Newcastle, NE1 3DX

Kaltur

Another showcase of the amazing food on offer in Eldon Square, last summer Kaltur opened the door to our hearts. With a small and humble interior, the traditional feel is intact.

The menu is small(ish) and heavily populated by drinks, but that only means that special care is given to each offering, ensuring every dish is first class.  The small interior allows for a more intimate and personalised service, resulting in an all-round authentic and enjoyable experience for everyone involved!

Recommended dish: The meat and cheese boards are a very popular and worthwhile option

Address: 8 High Bridge, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 1EN
